Family of 5: Halloween
Our family had never worn coordinating Halloween costumes in the past. Something about knowing our family was complete with the addition of our baby girl motivated me to try a theme this year. I searched pinterest and saw several inspo photos that were quite frankly, overwhelming. I realized if I was going to commit to a theme, it had to be one that I could draw inspiration from, but not have to get every detail exactly the same. I realized that I could re-imagine the characters from one of my favorite childhood cartoons, Scooby-Doo.
Each character is iconized by very specific colors. Daphne with her purple dress, green neck tie, and light pink tights. Fred with his blue bell bottoms, white sweater, blue collar and orange neck scarf. Velma with her bob, yellow turtle neck and pleated skirt. Shaggy with his lime green shirt and brown pants. Then of course, Scooby, a brown dog with a couple of black spots and the memorable teal collar sporting the “SD” for Scooby.
So my journey began to find the right pieces in the right colors to bring the essence of the Scooby-Doo cast to life. Yes, I could have just ordered costumes, but I didn't want the thin expensive costumes that we would wear just once. I figured if I purchased actual clothing, we could reuse them outside of Halloween and hand down the clothing when we were done with them. Plus, I wanted to recreate the looks with clothes more appropriate for northeast weather at the end of October.
Shaggy
Lime green crew neck and corduroy brown pants, both sourced from Poshmark. Black Salehe Bembury Crocs on his feet (already owned). We held off on the wig because it just didn't seem necessary to purchase a one time use item that wasn’t going to make or break the theme.
Scooby
Warm Scooby-Doo beanie from Amazon, brown hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants from the children's place, teal turtleneck sourced from Poshmark and black Salehe Bemburry Crocs on his feet (already owned). I used E.L.F. cosmetics waterproof eyeliner pen to create freckles and a doggy nose on his face. It did NOT SMUDGE at all. I highly recommend it. BONUS option: There is a version of this hat with a Scooby face on it, then the eyeliner is not necessary.
Velma
Cat and Jack Mustard Yellow turtleneck and warm tights. Burgundy corduroy skirt , black shoes, and bob wig from Amazon. With this look, the wig felt NECESSARY to scream Velma, especially since my daughter was an 8 month old baby. I accessorized with a magnifying glass my older son had in his desk and I took the nose and mustache off one of those party favor glasses and it worked out perfectly. She ended up taking them off anyway so I am glad I didn't spend money on it.
Daphne
Lime green Amazon turtleneck under a purple Hanes crew neck sweater. Pale pink wide leg jeans from Old Navy, Purple Crocs with Scooby-doo jibbitz, and a lavender Amazon head scarf. Even without the Daphne red wig, I was able to recreate an obviously recognizable daphne.
Fred
Blue bell bottom jeggings from Target. Yes these are marketed to be sold for girls, however, they were PERFECT to give the classic Fred look. A blue collared shirt from Children’s Place, White Hanes crew neck, orange scarf around the neck. Brown warm cozy crocs sourced from Poshmark.
